The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete (Alfred Masterwork Edition) [Paperback] Review

The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete [Paperback]If this is too intimidating for you, I would start with Czerny -- Practical Method, Op. 599 (Complete) (Alfred Masterwork Edition), which is thinner and simpler than this.

If THAT'S too difficult for you, I would fall back to Preliminary School of Dexterity, Op. 636, which is about as low as you can go and still be playing authentic Czerny that hasn't been watered down.(I don't know why Amazon doesn't have a picture of it:it's certainly not rare or out of print.)

Only after finishing that should you go for the mother lode, the School of Velocity.

All of these Alfred editions are the best:carefully edited and handsomely presented.Palmer didn't simply run those old galleys again:everything's been recomposited and -- importantly for me -- the notes have been made larger where possible. At any rate, it's certainly more readable than that old yellow version everyone seems to own.

Complete Preludes, Books 1 and 2 [Paperback] Review

Complete Preludes, Books 1 and 2 [Paperback]This is one of those sets that I think, if I were stranded on a desert island with a Steinway (and a good piano tuner), I could delve into for years with little other music.
These short pieces are excellent for sight-reading difficult passages with many key changes and unexpected accidentals, for intricate harmony and for expression of mood. The names are evocative of feelings and sights, such as an underwater cathedral, bells in the evening air, wind through heather and the like.

Though short pieces of a few pages, each provides a particular challenge to the piano student, as well as being appropriate for concert encores or intimate playing.

Impromptus, Op. 90 (Alfred Masterwork Edition) [Paperback] Review

Impromptus, Op. 90 [Paperback]I was quite disappointed in this product. I'm not sure if it's just the copy I got, but the printing/stapling went awry and one side of the music did not print on page 20. I would ask for a refund of this product if I hadn't gotten it online. Save yourself the trouble and get a copy of this music that doesn't look like the printer was having an off day.

The Twelve Notes Of Music: Ear Training And Interval Study Course [Paperback] Review

The Twelve Notes Of Music: Ear Training And Interval Study Course [Paperback]I purchased this book in the hopes of finding a method to use with some of my students. As a professional teacher and performer, I am terribly dissapointed. In its 20 pages, the book does little more than define what intervals are, and offers little practical advice and no useful exercises on how to sucessfully learn intervals or recognize pitch. Further, the title 'Music Theory: Ear Training and Interval Study Course' is quite misleading. Sternal attempts to teach the student intervals by having the student play all intervals from the minor second up to the octave on the guitar. Thus, If you are not a guitar player, and/or do not read his non-standard guitar tablature this method will be completely useless for you. The back cover claims that this is a method for guitar, piano, or voice of which only guitar is really feasible because there are no notes or diagrams that can be read by vocalists or pianists or any other instrument for that matter (It only uses fretboard diagrams). Also, the front cover fails to mention that this is only intended for guitar, piano, and voice. If you are not a guitarist, this method will be unintelligible for you. If you are a guitarist, I would strongly suggest you find a different method as this is hardly a method, but more a very poor definition of intervals. This method is also problematic for guitar players in that Sternal does not address the tuning issues of the guitar. If you do not understand the problems of tuning a guitar, you will be learing these intervals incorrectly since you are using an improperly tuned guitar as a pitch reference. I hardly ever write reviews, but I was so turned off by this that I felt obligated to prevent others from making the same mistake.

Richard Rodgers Classics: The Phillip Keveren Series [Paperback] Review

Richard Rodgers Classics: The Phillip Keveren Series [Paperback]As a church organist/pianist, I was looking for some music just for me to play at home - to enjoy.I first became aware of these books when shopping locally at a music store (Keveren also has leveled series for easier piano (think kids) which as a piano teacher and mom have been very well received.)I recommend the piano solo series to other pianist friends - describing the books as well put together volumes that are fun to play. Most of the pieces are a few pages in length. If you are at the late intermediate level, they may take some time to work up.If you are accustomed to playing advanced music, a few times through and you can probably sight read many of the pieces.I have purchased many of the other books in this piano solo level, and I think this is one of the more challenging books in the series (compared to the Irish, hymn collection, patriotic, folk music) - because of some of the octave intervals / rhythm combinations. This is a composer's name I look for when I do my music shopping for myself and my students.

French Pianism: A Historical Perspective (Amadeus) [Hardcover] Review

French Pianism: A Historical Perspective [Hardcover]I purchased "French Pianism" to trace the heritage of my teacher, Leo Steffens. He was a student of Robert Casadeseus, who was a student of Louis Diemer, (not a very good teacher, or so the book says), who was a student of Anton Marmontel, who was not much of a player, but a very good teacher, who was a student of Pierre Zimmerman, one of the original French School pianists.
Zimmerman came of age in the Chopin Era, and thus he brought that approach into the mainstream of French pianism. The chart on pages 54-55 shows a clear pedagogical lineage.
Chopin was a bit of a self-taught original, as were Liszt and Beethoven. Mozart, as well as Bach came from a background of family schooling. So, no real connections there, although Beethoven has a lineage of students through Czerny, and Liszt had many students, but only one real protege', Carl Tausig, who died young.
There do not seem to be any "national schools" of pianism left, as the interviews with mid-20th century performers and teachers makes clear. The French School, with its "jeux perle" or light, fast sound, and decidedly non-German approach, has made way for a more international, and thus blander approach to making piano music.
It is a bit of a "thing" for pianists to know who they are "grand-students" of, and, now I know.
Nice photos, many short bios, and little editorializing make this an even-handed, if not exactly thrilling book.

Product Description:
The recognized pre-eminence of Paris as a center of the piano world dates from the early nineteenth century, and the rigorous standards of musical education that are the hallmark of the Paris Conservatoire transmitted the characteristic French piano style faithfully to each new generation for some 150 years. First published to critical acclaim in 1992, this landmark study, now considerably expanded and revised, surveys the historical development, performance practices, and pedagogical philosophies of this vital - and diverse - French school of piano playing. The author, himself a noted pianist, studied with several proponents of the jeu perle, that uniquely French style of playing categorized by rapid, clean, even passage work, note after note "bright and perfectly formed, like each pearl on a necklace." Over a fifteen-year period, he conducted more than seventy interviews with notable French-trained pianists, many of them new to this edition and all of them frank and lively conversationalists, ranging from a ninety-six-year-old Paul Loyonnet - an important link to the traditions of the nineteenth century - to emerging young talents of today. Adding an element of specificity to this edition are the author's detailed recollections of his own lessons with such luminaries as Gaby Casadesus, Jeanne-Marie Darre, Monique Haas, Eric Heidsieck, and Magda Tagliaferro.

This book is definitely great until advanced level, as it will be so enjoyable to play and you will never get bored. All 25 pieces have beautiful melodies and so enjoyable to learn and most importantly...the speed.I listened to the CD and it helps so much to feel the speed; and with such lovely melodies, I could not get bored. This book is sooo worth it to have in your collection.I'm so glad I have it in my collection.

Bach Short Preludes & Fugues (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

Bach Short Preludes & Fugues [Paperback]The layout of this book is exactly the same as older Kalmus editions, but the format is smaller. Not only scores are now too small, the print quality itself is low: staff lines and text elements have gaps, multiple beams touch etc. This makes everything very hard to read, especially for beginners. It simply looks like a cheap copy. I returned it and was lucky to find an old Peters edition elsewhere - a little discolored due to age, but much more enjoyable.

Music for Little Mozarts [Audiobook, CD] [Audio CD] Review

Music for Little Mozarts [Audio CD]This is a two CD set each CD is 30 minutes long. The second CD is for the "music discovery book", I love this CD, it is just perfect for group music classes and it is a fun CD for kids to just listen to.There are 25 songs: a hello song (mentions mozart mouse and beethoven bear), a goodbye song (could be used for any program), 8 rhythm instrument songs, 5 movement/music appreciation songs, and 8 listening/ear training songs.

The first CD is essentially a "book on CD" of the "music lesson" book and I don't see why you would ever use it because a teacher could read the story herself much more entertainingly.

Complete Ballades, Impromptus and Sonatas [Paperback] Review

Complete Ballades, Impromptus and Sonatas [Paperback]This is a great book. I have used it on numerous occasions and can give no more than an absolute satisfactory report. The Complete Preludes and Etudes for Pianoforte Solo [Paperback] Review

The Complete Preludes and Etudes for Pianoforte Solo [Paperback]Scriabin was a contemporary of Rachmaninoff, in fact, he studied under the same teacher. Like Rachmaninoff, he was a bridge composer between the late Romantic and the 20th Century period. He was far more modern, in fact, than Rachmaninoff, though his early works were profoundly influenced by Chopin (Rachmaninoff less so--he was influenced by Chopin but also Tchaikovsky.)
Despite the fact both composers shared Russian heritage and a love of the piano, Rachmaninoff did not admire Scriabin's works, saying he had gone off in a wrong direction. While I love Rachmaninoff's piano works intensely, I have to say that he was really wrong about Scriabin. This is some of the most gorgeous, introspective, Impressionist piano music ever written.
Scriabin had a tragically short life, yet he composed quite a number of etudes, preludes, sonatas and other short piano works. Dover has done a huge favor by putting all the preludes and etudes into a single volume. There is enough material here for years of exploration into the music of a piano master. The edition is a compact volume that manages to sit well on the piano music stand, and the music print is clear and easy to read.

Perfect Wrong Note - Learning to Trust Your Musical Self (Softcover) (Amadeus) [Paperback] Review

Perfect Wrong Note - Learning to Trust Your Musical Self [Paperback]I am a professional musician, a retired piano teacher of 25 years. In October of 2004, I produced my first cd of pre-Baroque pieces into an album called, "Carry the Light."Recently, I found out about "The Perfect Wrong Note" by William Westney from a friend. The book is stunning, progressive and suffice it to say, it will rub some traditionalist the wrong way.Westney totally challenges traditional teaching methods and rightly so. There is a revealing "Question and Answer" section in the book on pp. 95-97 which provides an astute summary of Westney's teaching philosophy. I found the following Q and A challenging to some very traditionalist teachings on using the metronome; "Is it a good idea to use a metronome?"Westney's replies, "Only for short periods, as a check of tempo consistency. If we use it too much we become passive slaves to it, and our inner rhythm stays dormant."Westney emphasizes that playing the piano is a "whole body, whole brain" experience. In terms of Westney's approach being a "feel good" philosophy, nothing could be further from the truth. When asked (p. 97), "Can your approach be simply stated as, "Just don't fret about wrong notes, after all nobody's perfect.?"Westney's response is clearly direct; "No.This isn't a feel good philosophy: it's a pragmatic problem-solving plan along the road to artistry.Control, accuracy, and refinement are still the goals."Westney takes a groundbreaking approach to teaching piano without killing the hope and aspirations of the student. That is to be herald and this work will be deeply respected by teachers willing to take on new and exciting challenges that take heed to an important ethos Westney holds for anyone practicing the piano."As you practice sense that you are taking care of yourself at every moment.Expect musical performing to be fun and feel good.Question any part of it that doesn't feel that way.Think of yourself as a healty athlete. Relax frequently and take stock." (p.227) I can't think of any performing philosophy that is more hope filled than that.

A Touch of Romance (WB Solo Library) [Paperback] Review

A Touch of Romance [Paperback]My all-time favorite piano piece to play is Le Salon de Musique by Eugenie Rocherolle, so when I saw a whole book of romantic music by her, I had to have it. These pieces are just want I had hoped they would be. Her ability to mix up chords to hold an eerily enchanting tone is just the signature feel I want in the romantic pieces I so enjoy playing. I took 7 years of actual classical piano lessons and have dappled in it for the last 4 or so years, so I would say for a mid to late intermediate player these pieces are just the right amount of challenging.I could sight-read through them slowly and decide the first time through that Souvenirs de Paris was going to be my favorite piece. Each song is only a few pages long, and they are quite different from one another (I think one of them has a Russian feel) making learning them much more enjoyable than a long strenuous journey toward playing perfection.
