Peachtree Road: Piano/Vocal/Guitar [Sheet music] Review

I simply love the album, Peachtree Road. This book does a great job laying out the chords for piano or guitar. If you are looking for a faithful representation of Elton John's work, this is it. I played along with the album for a lot of the album and so far every song is in the correct key.

Elton John - Anthology (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

Theres always a problem with books like these. Elton John is very good Piano Player and the problem for anyone compiling a volume like this is, do they try and transcribe Eltons own accompaniment to his vocal and then print the vocal line separately, or do they just print the melody and not attempt the accompaniment. This book does both.

For example "Burn Down the Mission" has the vocal line separate and the two main staves are reserved for an approximation of Eltons accompaniment. This particular track is well done and the essence of Eltons Piano style can be seen here.

There are many other tracks where this isn't done (i.e. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) and the melody is played straight without the distinctive fills behind the tune. Even played well these versions sound pretty average, because when the melody is incorporated Eltons Piano style goes out the window.

However to amalgamate the melody and accompaniment would result in difficult arrangements for the amateur Pianist so it is mostly avoided in this volume. This book also omits any Piano solos (such as on Bennie and the Jets). Chord symbols are provided.

It contains 50 songs the earliest being Your Song, Border Song, Take Me To The Pilot and Sixty Years On (all 1970) the latest being Ball and Chain, Blue Eyes, Empty Garden and Legal Boys all from Jump Up (1982).
There are 7 tracks from GYBR.

I would rate the difficulty level as moderate. For authentic Elton John Piano transcriptions you are best to look at the wonderful website Eltonscafe.

Classic Rock: Keyboard Play-Along Volume 3 [Paperback] Review

I'm primarily a guitarist, but I like to dabble in keyboards. I always wanted to learn the parts for the The Allman Brothers Band classic, Jessica, and here it is! The CD makes it easy to slow things down while you learn the parts (good for a hack keyboard player like me!). These are the actual parts from the songs, not some cheesy piano/vocal arrangement. You get 8 songs and the CD for less than 12 bucks, so I think it's a pretty good deal.

One note: The reason I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it really only transcribes the piano parts. Any other keyboard parts (organ, synth) are not written out, though you do hear them played on the CD. One semi-exception: Come Sail Away. In their transcription of this song, they do write out some of the synth parts in the middle where there is no piano, resulting in kind of a one keyboard arrangement of the whole song.

I'm looking forward to Vol 7, Rock Classics, which Amazon says is coming out in June.

Rock Classics Vol.7 Keyboard Play-Along BK/CD [Paperback] Review

The latest in the Keyboard Play-Along series provides excellent, accurate transcriptions of some great rock songs. The approach in these books is, in general, to arrange the keyboard parts for one player. In other words, if you were the lone keyboard player in a band, but were faced with playing a song that had multiple keyboard parts, what would you play? These transcriptions do a great job of addressing that real-world need. There are some exceptions; for example, the sequenced parts of Baba O'Riley are shown in all their glory. On Carry On Wayward Son, they show both the organ and piano parts, but only the one that is more prominent at any one time, which makes sense.

The CD is an excellent addition, too. The backing tracks have everythingbut vocals, and they sound great. Any cover band could aspire to be as accurate as these backing tracks are! The slowdown software makes it a great learning tool, too.
Highly recommended.

Paperback Songs: Classic Rock: Melody Line, Chords and Lyric for Keyboard, Guitar, Vocal [Paperback] Review

I bought this book and a couple of others so that I could learn a few songs. When I played with the CD's the chords on some of the songs just didn't match. It is not that accurate and if you can the songs you want to learn elsewhere, I would suggest that over this book. Some of the songs are pretty accurate, that is why I gave it the three stars.

Jerry Lee Lewis- Killer Piano (2007) Review

This is not a STRICTLY instructional video, it DOES have lots
of interview time, and NO tips whatsoever on 'how to do it'. But if you are a JLL fan, it is very well done. There is plenty of studio footage of JLL playing 10 songs piano and vocal, all with split screen shots showing the hands and the piano. All 10 songs are followed by FULL SONG clips from a 2006 concert of JLL with band playing the same song just demonstrated in studio. JLL of 2006 is an OLD MAN, past his prime, but again, if you are a fan of his work and his way of playing piano, and his way of singing, etc.... this is a treasure. I promise!

The Van Halen Keyboard Songbook [Paperback] Review

Missing a few goodies, but otherwise these transcriptions get the job done.Unlike other pop keyboard transcriptions these do not try to include the vocal line as part of the arrangement making them more authentic to the original recorded versions, however, "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" ain't no keyboard song.Would have preferred "Feels So Good".

The Elton John Keyboard Book [Paperback] Review

Here you'll find Elton John's music transcribed down to a tee. This is a welcome change to nonsensical 'interpretations' that conspicuously sound exactly the same as the melody line. You want to play 'Bennie and the Jets' from the starting heavy chords to the verse to the jazzy piano solo, here you go. Blue Eyes, Rocket Man, Someone Saved My Life Tonight (excellent song)... it's all here. In some instances (like Honky Cat for example), there's just no point in bothering to learn the music EXACTLY, because Elton John just improvised within chords in the first place. So it's best for you to do the same unless you want to pore through pages of the same music phrased slightly differently. Next time it would be better to include the more 'precise' songs in Elton's catalogue.
Anyway, this is a great collection. Some of the songs aren't very well known but get the album they're on and you're away. Hours of fun.
