Hi, momwith5kids, it's Jan with Piano Wizard here. I just wanted to let you know that it looks like you've only seen the very first step of the game, and have not yet discovered how it progresses to an advanced level.

It's true that Step 1 is simply pressing the keys as game objects move on the screen (somewhat akin to Guitar Hero). We start out that way so you feel the joy of actually playing a song from the first second. But our Steps 2, 3, and 4 progress you very naturally through actually learning how to read the real musical notes of the song. We've known kids to go through the four steps and then play the same song on a real piano in about a half hour.

We also sell "Piano Wizard Academy" materials that include video tutorials and sheet music for the first 50 songs in the game. It's like having a piano teacher in a box (and translates to about 2 years of a child's instruction).

Aside from the 200 songs that come with the game, you can also download your own choice of music off the internet and keep adding to your game forever.

So yes, momwith5kids, it feels like a simple game in Step 1. But it then grows with you to take you as absolutely far as you want to go. Any age, any level of musicianship.

Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature [Paperback] Review

This book would be particularly useful for piano teachers or for adult students of piano who are trying to expand their repertoire.It would be less useful for an advanced pianist (which I am not), as the rating scale is too simplistic and many well-known, but very difficult, works are not included.
There is a great selection of pieces from both well-known and very obscure composers, and includes virtually every significant teaching piece that one might think of.Each piece is graded in difficulty from 1-10.The grading is not as detailed as that used by Wolters, where each piece is given a separate grade for both technical and musical difficulty, but the grading is quite accurate and helpful in selecting pieces that you can actually play, if you're not a top-notch pianist.The biggest advantage of this book over other piano repertoire books is the very extensive coverage of twentieth-century music, including even some pieces for prepared piano, so it's a good place to look for some new stuff to play to annoy your friends and neighbors.
A minor weakness of the book is the lack of headings at the top of each page, which makes it sometimes irritating to use as a reference, since you may have to page forward or backwards several pages to figure out where you are in the alphabetical listing of composers.The typesetting and page layout make it look a bit amateurish, although it is carefully edited and doesn't contain a lot of typographical errors.

Rare Finds for Piano (Steinway Library of Piano Music; Book and CD) [Paperback] Review

Joseph Smith's thesis is that "On the one hand, I certainly believe undeserving works do not last in the active repertoire--acknowledge pieces are generally masterpieces. On the other, I protest the seeming inverse--the assumption that a piece's absence from the repertoire is proof per se of its inferiority."

This collection proves his point. These "rare finds" are not just "rare," they're _finds_.

They're all charming, and some are more than charming. (My personal favorites are "The Castle's Half and Half," an attempt by Vernon and Irene Castle to launch a popular dance based on 5/4 time; and Percy Grainger's "The Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol," which sounds as if it should be a light seasonal confection, but which I found deeply moving).

Each piece is accompanied by a one-or-two-page interesting, readable essay.

The CD is not just a learning aid; the pieces are beautifully played and the CD is a pleasure to listen to.

Technique Builders: Fundamental Study Patterns to Improve Piano Proficiency [Paperback] Review

This is a truly fine set of exercises for the late-beginner/early-intermediate pianist.Beyond the expected parallel and contrary motions, there are accompanied exercises.One hand plays an accompaniment to the other hand's scale runs, arpeggios, and chord inversions.Everything is related to the playing of songs.

This book focuses heavily on the seven diatonic triads of the C major scale and their inversions and arpeggios.But it also includes work on all twelve major triads and many chromatic studies, as well.Simple repeated bass figures, rhythms, octaves, and finger-independence drills round things out.

I really enjoy Technique Builders.I can open it to nearly any page and play something challenging and musical-sounding.Ten minutes to an hour of exploring its pages is very rewarding.I give it 5 stars!

Alfred's Piano 101: An Exciting Group Course for Adults Who Want to Play Piano for Fun (2 Volumes) [Plastic Comb] Review

This book explains everything really well and has some great practice songs in it. My only complaint would be that it's a little too easy - I had taken a little piano before and I could pretty much play everything in the book with some practice. If you are just starting out though, and have never played before, it's a great resource. Highly recomended!

This book fully deserves its subtitle "easy to play arrangements that make you sound great". The chords are sophisticated but easy on the ear, and the songs are standards usable in many cocktail piano settings. I bought a beat-up used version that had somebody else's (very helpful) notes in it; grab your copy while Amazon still has them.

For the beginner, this book is excellent. I have looked at many piano books when I first began playing, and most of them were usually too complicated, or too simplistic. This book, however, was one that fell right in the middle and helped me understand all kinds of important ideas in music, such as harmony and melody, building chords and scales (and understanding HOW), reading music, how to understand progressions, and how to play by ear and improvise. It is certainly geared toward getting you "up and playing" in the simplest, fastest way, at a moderate pace, with a good depth of information that does not get overwhelming. Because of this, this book is probably suited much more for the person who has no music experience and wants to learn the basics of how to play out of fake books and begin improvising. It is probably not good for those who want in-depth and more advanced theory of music, but it is an excellent book to use as a stepping stone toward more adva! nced piano study. This is a must have book for any beginnger.
