Etudes For the Piano: Complete (Alfred Masterwork Edition) [Plastic Comb] Review

Etudes For the Piano: Complete [Plastic Comb]This edition is awesome. It has a plastic spiral that lets the book open and lay flat, and in comparison to books without it this feature is definitely better.

The measures are numbered and they are spaced evenly throughout the pages. There is no crowding of notes and footnotes are kept at the bottom. The font and note color is big and black too.

Overall this takes the cake because Chopin's Etudes are so difficult the edition must be as clear to understand as possible.

I only wish that Alfred publishing would make more complete editions like this of other artists such as Beethoven and Debussy. In any case this edition is superior to the Schirmer editons.

Product Description:
Although each study emphasizes an aspect of virtuoso piano technique, the etudes are some of the most effectively moving of all the concert works in piano literature. This 144-page volume includes the 24 Etudes, Opp. 10 and 25 as well as the three etudes without opus numbers composed in 1839 for Moscheles and Fetis's Method of Methods. Pedaling is taken from the original manuscripts and first editions, and fingering is editorial.

Complete Etudes for Solo Piano, Series II: Including the Paganini Etudes and Concert Etudes [Paperback]The so good edition of the entire piano music of Franz Liszt ( it's not really complete, sadly) made by the pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni. It's not easy to find this edition. Dover offers just the completeetudes(in two volumes). As usual for Dover, not first quality printing, butfor this price it's a bargain and a good complement for the Budapestedition.

The Right Hand According to Tatum [Paperback] Review

The Right Hand According to Tatum [Paperback]I found this book to be pretty well written. the author gives an explanation of each phrase, some notes about it and possible variations, and also a brief discussion of the way tatum utilized all those phrases. the book also offers some transcriptions of tatum. But regardless of this, i felt this isnt the way to go: the best way to improve your playing is to transpose these solo's yourself and come up with your way of playing his phrases. Overall, very informative and interesting book about one of the greatest (jazz) musicians of all time

The Complete Preludes & Etudes: For Solo Piano [Paperback] Review

The Complete Preludes & Etudes: For Solo Piano [Paperback]Speaking of correcting misinformation, this is definitely *not* the Paderewski edition. The Mikuli and Paderewski editions are certainly not the same, although if you look in the commentary in the back of any Paderewski Chopin score, you will find that the Mikuli is one of the many sources that were consulted for the Paderewski.

Dover used to publish a reproduction of the Paderewski edition years ago, and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, they no longer seem to do so.

Playing Keyboard Bass Lines Left-Hand Technique for Keyboards (Piano Method) [Paperback] Review

Playing Keyboard Bass Lines Left-Hand Technique for Keyboards [Paperback]I got this book hoping for some good "base line" advice. Well, I have to admit this book was a lot more complex than I thought a book on this topic would be. Usually, jazz theory books have maybe a page or twodedicated to base lines. Well, this book is about 100 pages dedicated toall kinds of drills for base lines, mostly the II-V-I progression.Basically it's filling in base notes in between chords, using chordal ornon-chordal notes, in different time sequences. The CD runs through all ofthe drills, which are mostly minor permutations of the last one played. Iwas kind of hoping for a little more advice on how to construct good baselines if you're using other types of progressions. And also maybe somethingon how baselines relate to chords, pedal point, slash chords, or non-tonalpolychordism. Then again this is just a book on base line playing, so Iwon't be hard on this book because this stuff is obviously verychallenging, and it requires a lot of practice, so this author decided thatthis is the only way to go with it. Get it if you're into to base lineplaying for old standards.
