Gershwin's Improvisations for Solo Piano [Paperback] Review

I've read some criticisms elsewhere concerning the accuracy of these Artis Wodehouse transcriptions.I'm not sure of the absolute note-for-note authenticity but the pieces sound right to my ear.These are challenging selections that are very difficult if you're trying to approach the speed of the originals.Unless you have a left-hand span of an honest tenth, you'll need to do some rolling or rearranging to get all of the richness of the stride harmonies.Still, this music is a lot of fun and much more demanding than the two page arrangements so common in other Gershwin collections because it's what he actually played!

Casio PX-320 Privia Digital Piano Review

I have played the Casio PX-320 for a couple weeks and am a beginner/intermediate piano player.The PX-320 keys have texture and shape and pressure and volume range and return speed that invites making music.The PX-320 is scaled (graded) so that treble notes are easier and quicker versus bass notes are harder and slower.The keys are weighted and have a simulated hammer action.For my taste the keyboard is a joy to play and is close to an acoustic piano.

I think the Yamaha YPG-635 and Yamaha P85 have at least as good touch and piano sound.I liked the Yamaha YPG-635 display and controls and features and sounds.The YPG-635 is too wide to lay flat in my car while the PX-320 lays on my back seat or back floorboard.The PX-320 base is flat and as large as the top, unlike the P85 that has a base smaller than the top.The P85 has 10 voices.The PX-320 weighs 26 lbs (12kg).

The PX-320 has 11 one-touch sounds like grand piano, electric piano, organ, strings and synth-voice.The PX-320 has 60 wide ranging Casio voices.The PX-320 has 128 General MIDI (GM) voices and 2 Drum Sets. I am pleased with the variety and quality of the voices.I like the large 3-character display and miss a numeric keypad and graphic display.The speakers are fine for a bedroom or living room.If the recessed screws underneath the back are loose the speakers can cause plenty of subtle or annoying noise.

I like the Casio PX-320 price, car fit, finger action, voices, 5 song recording or playback with as little as 2 key pushes, and usable speakers.I look forward to exploring 2-track recording, quick registration, 70 play-along rhythms, and flash memory slot.The Casio PX-320 is enjoyable to play and delightful to hear and easy to learn.

Schaum Note Speller / Book 2 (Revised) (Schaum Method Supplement) [Paperback] Review

I bought this to help me learn the notes for learning how to play piano. Mom recommended it. (she taught piano lessons when I was a baby 30 years ago)

She said it is a classic, and although it is kind of boring, this is what's needed to learn the notes so that I can ultimately read music and play Mozart. It seems to be working.

I leave it in the bathroom with a pencil, and work on it for those few minutes when there's nothing else to do with my mind. ;)

The Complete Keyboard Player : A Summary of the Courses of Books One through Three (Music Sales America) [Paperback] Review

This book is ok if you want to learn playing keyboard with built-in auto-accompaniments. The lessons are almost exclusively on playing melody lines with basic chords (so you can play the auto backing). If you want to expand your playing, you would eventually want to learn proper left hand rhythm techniques rather than using 'single finger chords' found in electronic keyboards. This book doesnt cover techniques for different rhythm genres (i.e. blues, rock, pop, country etc). So it isnt really that complete.

Kurzweil SP2XS 88-key Stage Piano With Speakers and Stand Review

Now that all Kurzweil's can be layered and split, their glaring weakness is all the more conspicuous.The company, in my opinion, makes the best digital pianos--in terms of sound, versatility, and keyboard "feel"--but with the most convoluted, incoherent, least helpful instructions.Guaranteed to lead to many all-nighters for musicians just trying to "set up" the keyboard for the next day's gig, which may not have a bass player or drummer.

If you have q friend, or a knowledgeable techie/gear-head who works cheap, by all means hire him.The manual, as usual, looks like it's been written by a committee.After talking about the most "powerful" dimension of the keyboard as its adaptiveness to set-ups, it fails to explain or illustrate how to construct sounds in the favored "set-up," or "500," mode rather than the more limiting "performance" mode.It gives no directions or helpful illustrations on how the user might be able to use one of the factory set-ups (all of them unusable) as a "template" to help the user with the creation of his own more practical set-ups.It doesn't explain how to transpose a good acoustic bass sound up an octave into a playable range without having all of the notes in the treble, or right hand, also transposed, except into an unplayable range.It provides a paragraph on doing a "hard reset," so that the player can get rid of all the monstrosities he's created and start afresh--unfortunately the manual fails to provide the vital information that before the "reset" button will activate the instructions permitting a hard reset, the user must first depress the "Global" button.(By accident, and several hours later, I finally stumbled upon it.)

Whether the reader finds it merely curious or confounding, the manual will introduce and begin to discuss some of the specifics of splitting, layering, set-up programs, etc.Then in a late section of the book, the reader finds a paragraph stating that the instrument is capable of "layering and splitting, which means adding on another sound or dividing the keyboard into two or more zones so that different sounds can be played, a feature that can often be convenient for a musician, especially one who is playing in a show" (!!!).In other words, the paragraph sounds as though the authors are unaware that anything preceded it.Instead of specific instructions, we're given a reductive introduction that sounds like it belongs in the ad sheet!I's in details like this where Kurzweil seems determined to cut the corners, in the process cutting the frustrated user to shreds.

I could say that this latest Kurzweil gives me more problems when, during the middle of a fast-moving passage in the middle of a tune, I attempt to go from one program to another.Often the button doesn't register my quick press, the light blinks back at me when it should have changed--but for all I know I've programmed it wrong.The same goes for the sustain pedal.It's the slipperiest pedal I have yet to encounter on an electric keyboard.At one time, Roland marketed a pedal with a heel flap, which made eminent sense and was quite effective (enough reason to get rid of it in this inscrutable market).The bottom surface of this Kurzweil pedal is less abrasive than Kurzweil pedals I've had with my K1000, PC2, or PC1se, squirting across a linoleum floor like a hocky puck repeatedly over the course of a 4-hour job (might as well have been 40).Maybe that's the way they like them in Minnesota.

Schoenhut My First Piano II, White Review

I was really let down by this product. My two year old uses it as a sitting bench...yes, it's that small! When she does try to play it she has to sit on her knees and crouch down. It is otherwise really well made and has surprisingly good sound...if it were double the size I would love it...as it is, it simply sits in the corner of the room unused.

Classic Rock - Keyboard Recorded Versions [Paperback] Review

This book is somewhat similar to Hal Leonard's other classic rock keyboard transcription book, but features a few songs not found in the other one. Although the other reviewer for some reason seemed disappointed by finding all the keyboard parts written out, that is actually the beauty of this book. It's not another PVG book full of cheesy piano arrangements. It's the real keyboard parts, and all of them. Guitarists have been enjoying accurate rock transcriptions for years now, so it's great to see the same kind of material being made available for keyboard. Keep 'em coming!

I had to search high and low for Zizzo's edition of the rarer preludes. Here, you have all of the Gershwin keyboard works, including the short preludes I, II and III, as well as those rare preludes "Novelette in Fourths" and "Sleepless Nights." The "I've Got Rhythm" variations are virtuoso--so beware, this book ranges from the playable to the shockingly difficult. But I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to have it all in one book finally. Thank you, Ms. Zizzo. Even if I can't play all of these, it's "S'wonderful" to be able to read the scores.

88 Keys - The Making of a Steinway Piano (Amadeus) [Hardcover] Review

This is fundamentally an oversized pamphlet.It is double-spaced with wide margins and still only has about 130 pages including many illustrations.Steinway has a CD-rom, which one can obtain quite easily, which covers many Steinway construction topics with better illustrations (including video) than this pamphlet. Anyone with any knowledge at all of piano construction (viewers of the Steinway CD- rom video, and a couple of manufacturers' brochures) will be disappointed in this book.
The book contains no photographs.Hard to believe, eh? The illustrations are excellent, but do not seem to be integrated with the text and very few are diagrammatic showing how things work, just show how they are, if you are lucky.
Many topics are described without detailed reference and explanation with an illustration or diagram.
E.g..Pg. 15 clavichord mechanism is described verbally, without diagrams.
Pg 64:English style ... "the hammer heads are placed at the far end of the mechanisms and move forward when the keys are struck."I am clueless as to what this would look like. " a glimpse at any contemporary grand piano keyboard will..." How about a picture?
Pg 48-49 Re:matched veneers:" a careful look at the case of any natural wood-finished Steinway will show you how good they are."No photographs or illustrations.
Pg 52 re Scales."these characteristic dimensions differentiate pianos from different makers more than any other technical element."Perhaps I do not understand the statement, but a Steinway salesperson will point out three distinct differentiations between Steinway and its competitors, which are technically related in my mind.
I was abhorred to look down at the page number, 62, half way through the book, and realized I had only learned a few things of interest and had not learned anything of several topics which I had assumed would be covered.While I did not keep track of the time, I felt I had only been reading a short while.
On several occasions the author begins on what appears an interesting topic, but he either aborts early or has no illustrative diagrams and I cannot follow, despite very good grades in science classes from a prestigious private etc.
Pg. 56.He starts talking about harmonics, but has no diagrams, and again, if one does not know harmonics will probably just be confused.
He talks about sound board gluing, but again no illustrative diagrams or dimensions on final cut.How thick is a soundboard?
Bridge: verbally describes making one, but no diagrams or detailed illustrations.
I will stop with the last.One thing I would certainly expect from a book on making a piano is a detailed explanation with diagrams of how the action works. Pg.71 (this paragraph is unbelievable):"A model of a piano's action is a fascinating thing to behold.I used to play with one for hours on end ..." "The answer is that the pianos action has evolved over years of experimentation."That's it!No explanation of how the mechanism of the action actually works.One very nice still illustration, but no explanation or additional diagrams.
If this book does not sell on Amazon, it will not sell anywhere, because I would never have bought this oversized pamphlet at a bookstore.

The Collection of Christmas Music: Easy Piano [Paperback] Review

I liked that this book had a very big assortment of songs and for the most part they were pretty easy to play for beginners, as promised. My biggest problem was with the printing of the book. Some of the pages were so blurry, like they had been photocopied 100 times, and the printing lost it's crispness. On a couple pages, I could barely read the notes or the lyrics. It's very unprofessional.

Complete Fairy Tales for Solo Piano [Paperback] Review

I had first known of Medtner's music when my piano teacher played one of the fairy tales for me.I only thought it was okay, because my teacher was by no means a virtuoso.Then I saw a video of Marc-André Hamelin playing Fairy Tale op. 26 n.1 and I was hooked.I've learned that piece now, and I play it every day.The only thing about the book I don't really like is the binding.It's bound like a paperback book you'd buy in a store, which makes it difficult for the book to stay open on the stand when you're playing.In fact, I wish all music books could be bound like the Alfred Masterwork editions of Chopin's music.Those are easy to open, and they stay open.Anyway, I'd highly recommend this book, if only for the music.

My impression is that this book (and the other books in the series) are not meant to be "stand alone" books in the complete art of keyboard harmony and playing vocal music on the piano, or learning how to accompany.The preface notes the series should be used in connection with a regular standard piano course, which teaches all the basics.This book provides something you don't usually see in basic piano courses - exercises in harmonizing music and embellishing songs. It does include "popular" piano music (from the 1950s) and shows how to create chord patterns, right hand fillers - good stuff for the piano player learning to move beyond the printed page, or nice for the adult piano player that perhaps doesn't want the basic theory and exercises, and just wants to play something fun on the piano by teaching themselves to improvise on standard melodies.

Etudes, Children's Corner, Images Book II, and Other Works f [Paperback] Review

For years, due to copywrite issues, "The Children's Corner" suite was only available in a French edition. Now it's here, in an affordale Dover edition, along with some rarer piano solos.
"Children's Corner" ranges from playable ("Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum" and "The Little Shepherd" and "Doll's Lullaby" to the evilly tricky "Snow is Dancing" made famous by Tomita in an electronic version. The suite was written for Debussy's daughter and is utterly charming and really fun to play. The etude's from Book II are incomplete here, but have some of the nices works, along with a beautiful berceuse.
If you play piano and love the Impressionist composers, this is a must-have.

Blues, Jazz and Rock Riffs for Keyboards (Instructional) [Paperback] Review

This is a good book for anyone who hasn't played much rock or blues.The book is full of riffs - however, I found that there were sometimes riffs that were almost identical.You might play 2 pages of riffs, but it really is 2-3 riffs with some variations.

I'm not saying that this is particularly bad - especially if you would benefit from working on and perfecting some good finger patterns.These are mainly usable riffs and if you got used to playing them, I think you'd find that you use them a lot.

One of my favorite parts of this book happens to be when Mr. Eveleth writes short compositions that use these riffs one right after the other.This really gives a feel as to how you might go about using these riffs in a practical setting.

Also, almost everything is in the key of C.There are some benefits to this - but if you're going to get your money from this book, better be ready to either write out transpostions, or better yet, learn to transpose in your head.If you get all these riffs down in C, F, G and perhaps Bb and Eb, you will be able to play them without problem in most of the songs you'll come across.

I didn't personally spend much time with this book.I read through it once at the keyboard - played around with the compositions a bit, played the riffs that I liked in a few keys and otherwise, I only get it out once in a while to find a new finger pattern or idea.

This is a pretty good book if you take into consideration a few of the limiations I've mentioned!I would recommend it!

I'm studying music at university in hamilton ontario..
at the H.B.A level

well here is my opinion on this score....
the binding on this edition is lousy
it is simply glued in... and the glue is very cheap and the pages fall right out...
i had to spend an additional $10 to get the book put into a spiral binding..

it's not worth it... dover editions have sewn in bindings...

the selections in this edition are good, but it is close enough urtext so you're definitely on your own when it comes to fingering the right notes... especially the pieces like passapied.
the notation is an accurate size but dover is better since it is easier to read at the keyboard...

also dover editions usually are reprints of better more longlasting editions that have excellent points for page turning from my personal performing perspective, don't buy this get the dover......

it's cheaper and better....... i wish i knew about dover editionsbefore i bought this... p.s. if you enjoy music and theoretical topics i highly recommend [...]

The Complete Gershwin Preludes for Piano (Belwin Edition) [Paperback] Review

George Gershwin was a tremendously popular composer in the 1920's and 30's.He went beyond just writing popular tunes, and tried to branch out into more serious music.Not to say that the songs he wrote aren't masterpieces in their own right.Listen to the Gershwin Songbook as played by Andre Watts, a concert pianist.The Gershwin songbook contains arrangements of songs by the composer himself.Full of melody, charm and rhythm, true American classics.

The Preludes in this edition are more of the same.With a jazzy feel to them, they are very rewarding to play.They feel different under the hand, and remain a great opportunity for the classically trained pianist to expand his technique and ear.

This edition is well printed and easy to read. A fine edition of some very good music.

Yamaha P155B Contemporary Piano with Ebony Top Board, Black Review

Dont expect a big difference in sound quality over the P-140 or you will be dissapointed.At most there may be an ever so slight increase in micro-dynamic expressiveness on softer, subtle passages (maybe that's the 4th layer?), but dont expect anything to jump out at you.I mean subtle! Not much difference in the decay versus the P-140.About the same. I owned them both.The action is heavy and responsive on the P-155 (same as P-140) which I like and the features are an improvement over the P-140.Given how inexpensive and small digital memory has become, it would be nice if Yamaha could give us a DP with a natural sounding decay instead of a looped one. On a real piano the harmonic overtones decay faster than lower fundementals.This sonic reality has not been incorporated into this instrument unfortunately.The P-155 does sound resampled, just not enough to show a really audible difference from the P-140. At soft levels its pretty good but at mezzo forte or louder decay is unnatural, like the P-140.Sound quality via the built-in speakers is the same as P-140. Dynamic range and volume is a little better because of greater wattage but thats about it. Speakers and frequency range are unchanged.Unlike P-140 you can choose brightness levels in between Bright, Normal and Mellow for a total of 5, not 3 choices which is nice.If you can get one for $1,000 or less its worth it but I wouldn't spend 1200 on it over the P-140, unless you need the new features.

Sonatas and Three Fantasias, Vol. 2, Nos. 11-20 Piano (K03692) (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

This edition has the smallest type in any book of classical piano music I've ever seen. They somehow fit 7 lines of music per page while every other edition has 5 or 6. Not only are the notes tiny but the width is compressed to fit more notes to a line. If all of that isn't bad enough the print is faded. The pages look as if they were printed off of a bad copy machine. Kalmus used to print great books. I don't know what's happened to them. Buy another edition.

The Great Piano Works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Belwin Edition: The Great Piano Works of) [Paperback] Review

I purchased this item because I wanted to see suggested fingerings for some of the Mozart sonatas. The review says "The pieces include fingerings ". This is not exactly true. About a 3rd of the easier pieces have fingerings; the harder ones do not. The size of the music is large print, which is good for baby boomer eyes, but the quality is very poor and inconsistent from piece to piece. Smudged and blurry in places. The binding is of the type which, with a little use, will probably break into pieces. If you like this kind of challenging piano music, spend more on quality and don't buy this 'low budget' (i.e. low quality) product.
